Праздник Белого месяца, или Сагаалган, или Новый год по лунному календарю — главный праздник у бурят. Сагаалган, имеющий многовековую традицию, тесно связан с буддийским мировоззрением и отражает духовную основу жизни монголо-язычных народов, который отмечают его с 13-го века по приказу внука Чингисхана Хубилай-хана. Праздник посвящался окончанию трудной зимовки скота и приближению весны. Во времена воинствующего атеизма этот праздник был под запретом. В 1991 году решением Верховного Совета республики Бурятия праздник Белого месяца приобрел государственный статус.

Считается, что в конце зимы — начале весны с новолунием начинается новый восточный год. Встреча нового года начинается не в полночь, а рано утром, в первый день нового года. Все ждут этого торжества, наводят чистоту и порядок в доме и готовят традиционные кушанья, чтобы вдоволь угостить ими родных и друзей. Обязательно для праздничного застолья приготавливаются белые продукты из молока, так как белый цвет символизирует благополучие, чистоту помыслов, здоровье, процветание. В ночь новолуния буряты разводят костры, в которых сжигают старую одежду и вещи, символически прощаясь с прошлым. Во всех дацанах зажигают священный огонь, чтобы почтить духов умерших и возвестить начало Нового года. Времяисчисление по лунному календарю, основанному на чередовании лунных фаз, не совпадает с современным общепринятым календарём, рассчитанным на период годичного обращения Земли вокруг Солнца, поэтому Сагаалган приходится большей частью на разные числа февраля месяца по солнечному календарю.

В эти дни Улан-Удэ преображается, жители украшают фасады своих домов, а двери дацанов широко распахнуты, чтобы принять всех желающих. В эти дни по всему городу проходят праздничные мероприятия. Основное действие разворачивается на Площади Советов, где проходят массовые народные гуляния и театрализованные представления. Для горожан проходят праздничные концерты, выставки, мастер-классы, тематические вечера во всех культурных учреждениях и ДК.
